Research is important because it helps people to find out things like target audiences for ma tv program or film that they want to make . They can use existing content to see who watches it and find out who their target audience is and what the different programs USP is.

Secondary Research

Secondary research is using data that has already been collected by someone else  examples of this can include online  articles, books, websites, videos.

Purposes of different types of research 

Audience research:

The Purpose of  Audience Research is so the people/production company making the film can get an idea of who their target audience would be. This is Important so that the company can have an idea if the film will be worth making because they do not want to make a film that nobody would want to watch.

How does BARB work? - 

Broadcasters' Audience Research Board

They are in charge of  making the UK's television audience measurement currency. They collected Data on the people in the Uk's  viewing Behaviour. BARB has Two ways that they collect data one is from the BARB Panel and the second is census data from peoples online viewing. The BARB Panel has 5,300 homes in the uk that make up television viewing across the nation. This works by Kantar Media fitting every TV set in the panel home with a meter. Software metres can be installed on  devices such as phones, tables and computers.

Market research:

The Purpose of Market Research is to see what Films people will want to watch. And it will see how big the market is for an idea.

Production research: 

The purpose of production research is to assist production company's to find out what things are going affect what they are going to make. 

Legal and ethical considerations 

Copyright & Contractual -

Media Companys have to follow copyright laws for example thy cant use other people media without permission. their are also other laws that they have to follow.

Ethical- 

There are lots of different constraints in the media due to the number of laws that they have to follow there are to make sure that ethical things are put into consideration when making something. Media companies are not allowed to generalise groups, Stereotypes or Races.

Some examples of these are:

Gender: For example could have sexism or Genders in stereotypical roles.

Religious beliefs: could discriminate towards certain religions and beliefs or could offend certain peoples beliefs.

Regulatory and professional bodies issues 

British board of Film Classification (BBFC) - They regulate the content that is shown in the media, Since 1984 they have regulated.They also regulate some Video Games.

Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) -

The ASA is a self regulatory organisation of the advertising industry in the UK . Its job is to regulate the content of advertisements in the uk.The ASA makes sure ads across UK media adhere to the advertising rule.

Office for Communication (Ofcom) -

Ofcom Regulates the uk's communication Industries they regulate Radio,Tv, Postal and telephone. They are required to follow laws set by the Government.
